David Requiro, cellist |
Having captured 1st prize in both the Irving M. Klein International and Washington International String Competitions in the last year, David Requiro is emerging as one of America’s most promising young cellists. He has recently been named a top prizewinner at the 1st Gaspar Cassado International Violoncello Competition in Hachioji, Japan as well as winning the prize for best performances of the works by Gaspar Cassado. This season, Mr. Requiro will be appearing as soloist with the Pine Bluff, Peninsula, and Santa Cruz Symphonies as well as in a solo recital at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. He has made concerto appearances with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Santa Rosa, Oakland-East Bay, Fremont, Kensington, Quincy, and Diablo symphonies, as well as with Symphony Pro Musica in Boston. While at the Aspen Music Festival, he premiered Tan Dun’s Elegy: Snow in June (Concerto for Cello and Percussion) with members of the Aspen Percussion Ensemble. Mr. Requiro has also performed the European premieres of Lou Harrison’s Suite for Cello and Orchestra in Italy with the Crowden School Orchestra.
As a member of the Kashii String Quartet, Mr. Requiro has served on faculty at the Innsbrook Music Festival and Institute and has won the Silver Medal in both the 2005 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the 2005 Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competition. Mr. Requiro has collaborated with members of the Emerson, Takacs, Borromeo, Brentano, Orion, St. Lawrence, and Juilliard String Quartets. He has collaborated with such artists as Atar Arad, Gil Sharon, and the Cavani String Quartet, and has performed with the Alexander String Quartet in a benefit concert for the Crowden School. A former member of the New York Strings Seminar, David has also performed in the Aspen Music Festival, Emerson String Quartet Seminar, Music@Menlo, Perlman Chamber Music Program, and Giverny Chamber Music Festival.
Mr. Requiro is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studies with Richard Aaron. A native of Oakland, CA, he began the cello at age six and has studied with Milly Rosner, Bonnie Hampton, and Mark Churchill. He has attended the Crowden School and the Walnut Hill School for the Arts. For four seasons, Mr. Requiro was principal cellist of both the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra of Boston. He has also participated in master classes with Isaac Stern, Alexander Bailey, Marcio Carneiro, Colin Carr, Orlando Cole, Timothy Eddy, Clive Greensmith, Matt Haimovitz, and Lynn Harrell. Mr. Requiro’s instrument has been graciously loaned to him from the collection of Ray A. Carlsen of Bellevue, Washington.
